Regardless of what industry or niche or life stage you’re in, there is no shortage of self help, teachers, information, coaches and methodologies out there. And I’m here for it. Honestly. Heck I *am* it with my own coaching business.
BUT. Not everything is for everybody and that’s okay.
And can I just share that it really gets under my skin when influencers are thick with the ‘you just need to do it’ vibe?1
Enter, Dan Martell.
If you follow Dan, you might know what I’m talking about. And here’s the thing - I agree with almost everything he teaches on face value. I think he’s technically pointing people in the right direction!
HOWEVER.
There’s no room for excuses. No room for meeting people where they are.
He and others like him will share their knowledge (which is always the one and only ‘correct’ way), admit that the work and journey to execute will be hard work, and then proceed to beat you with the “no excuses” energy until you slink away unsuccessful, ashamed and alienated.
Or at least, that’s been my experience.
And it might not be yours.
You see, my experience, and how I’ve felt when coming across similar type influencers that seriously rub me the wrong way, is affected by my own hurts and hang-ups, my specific personality and my current life-stage.
Dan Martell is not for me.
Neither is the online fitness coach that I scoped out years ago who’s first post on her Facebook page started with “if you’re not willing to chuck the excuses at the door then I don’t even want you show up to my class.”
I’m more of a Kendra Adachi (Lazy Genius) and K.C. Davis (How to Keep House While Drowning) girlie. A ‘let’s find something that works for you’ with a healthy dose of compassion and empathy girlie.
I know so many people who have been hurt and fallen down the shame spiral trying to follow the “no excuses” gurus, and that breaks my heart. I wish it wouldn’t happen.
But… I’ve also worked with business owners who have thrived and unlocked some serious progress following that approach. For some, it was just what they needed!
…
So which approach is right? Or works?
Both?
Neither?
I don’t know.
But I do know hat Dan Martell isn’t for me, and if you’ve been nodding your head profusely while reading this, that maybe Dan Martell isn’t for you either, and that’s okay.
Best,
Amanda
